Topes de Collantes natural park tour begins with a short drive of around 40 minutes from the city of Trinidad to the small coffee town also called Topes de Collantes, a stop of between 20 and 30 minutes halfway is a must in the viewpoint, a cafeteria bar with a platform strategically located on a peak that offers a unique view of Trinidad, its coasts and part of the Valley of the Sugar Mills (Valle de los Ingenios)
Once in Topes, it is convenient to do a bit of History, before moving on to its main attraction, which are its forests and waterfalls.
Former President Fulgencio Batista, overthrown by Fidel Castro's Communist Revolution in 1959, was very fond of the city of Trinidad, its beaches and especially the well-preserved nature of the mountainous region of Topes de Collantes, the road that is still used to reach the site was built at the request of Batista, there he also had a retirement home built for his personal use, a kind of cabin to escape the stress of the city on vacations or weekends, his wife had a large building dedicated to the treatment and recovery of lung diseases built, a senator from that government also had a cabin built for personal use, when the Batista government was overthrown, all these buildings were expropriated by the Castro government….
Batista's cabin became a restaurant called Mi Retiro, the building built by Batista's wife became the Kurhotel Escambray, also aimed at clients seeking to recover from respiratory conditions, the senator's house became a museum of Cuban art, with works by the most important Cuban artists from the 1960s to the 1980s.
The community of Topes is proud of its coffee, the main crop in the area, so it is a good idea to visit La Casita del Café, a small cafeteria-museum dedicated to this local crop.
The main attraction of the area are its protected forests and its rivers and waterfalls... there are many, among the main ones are Salto El Caburní , Guanayara and Vegas Grande, normally only one of the waterfalls is visited since the walk through the forest is It's hard, although it's not extreme either, personally, I choose to visit Vegas Grande for my excursion, since it's the highest, it has a small cave behind the waterfall and a natural pool where you can swim, in my opinion, it's the most spectacular in the area.
On average, the visit to the waterfall itself takes about 3 hours, it is a bit exhausting but a very pleasant experience for nature lovers, it is a unique opportunity to enjoy the pure mountain air, the huge hundred-year-old pines of the Cuban tropical forest , the sound of birdsong, and hopefully even see some endemic species such as the tocororo, the national bird of Cuba.will stop in Barigua, a point of natural beauty where the client will have the opportunity to take photos and enjoy the only Y-shaped coconut plant that is known in Baracoa, the coconut capital. . Later we will stop at "El Paso de los Alemanes" a beautiful natural tunnel with a bit of history, followed by this we will arrive at the Yumurí Canyon, where we will walk up to a small height, a viewpoint of the Canyon and after enjoying the magnificent view, turning around we will love it. our eyes with the colorful endemic Polymites colorful snails that can only be observed in Baracoa and Maisi. Departing from the clients' accommodation or hotels, Valle de Los Ingenios is a must-see site to understand the colonial history of Trinidad, it is full of history mainly of slavery, myths and legends, it is also a UNESCO heritage site like to the historic center of the city.
This valley reaches an extension of around 250 square kilometers between the Sierra del Escambray to the north and the coasts of the Caribbean Sea to the south.
They are very fertile lands because all the rivers that descend from the Sierra cross the valley towards the sea, depositing their fertile sediments in it, this makes the valley an ideal area for the cultivation of sugar cane, which is why they flourished there since the 17th century many sugar factories that turned Trinidad into a very prosperous town.
These haciendas were made up of three general structures: the manor house, the sugar factory and the barracks where the slaves resided... some of these haciendas have partially survived to this day in different levels of conservation, either as archaeological ruins, in restoration process or completely restored.
I choose to visit four sites in the Valley that in my opinion perfectly sum up the history of the entire area.
1- Loma del Puerto Viewpoint, a brief stop at this viewpoint at the entrance of the valley offers a panoramic view of the area we are about to visit, perfect for an introduction to the history of the Valle de los Ingenios.
2- San Isidro de los Destiladeros , is one of the most important haciendas, the manor house is in the process of being restored and it is the only place where the factory, the barracks and other structures have survived, at least in ruins, which allows us to understand how this functioned industry in the 19th century.
3- Guáimaro, this mill had the highest sugar production in the world around 1827, the biography of its most illustrious owner Don José Mariano Borrel y Lemus, Marqués de Guáimaro, is worth listening to since he had a very interesting life, this house It is preserved quite original, it is a site that undoubtedly transports the visitor to the 19th century, especially for all the mural painting still intact on the interior walls that represent spectacular European landscapes.
4- Manaca Iznaga , this site has the most complete restoration among the sites to visit, its main attraction is the 40-meter tower still standing on the property as well as the myths and legends that surround this house and its tower.
